Description

The Influence of Benefit Design Features
on Drug Selection Decisions and Spending

This pilot project is designed to establish the utility of the MEDSTAT MarketScan Benefit Plan Design database, and measure the impact of benefit design features for prescription coverage on drug selection decisions by covered individuals.

The study has three tasks which are  (1) to design a prototype empirical model appropriate for assessing various benefit design effects using MarketScan data, (2) to apply the model to the 1999 MarketScan database for a sample of individuals receiving drug treatment for hypertension, and (3) to determine whether the results of the pilot warrant using the model to study benefit design effects on drug treatments for other disease groups (eg, COX-2/NSAID treatment of arthritis) in later versions of the MarketScan database (The claims data for 2000 are available now but the Plan Design Database will not be available until next year).
