Stuart, B. (P.I.), Palumbo, F., Briesacher, B. "Innovative Approaches to Controlling Medicaid Prescription Drug Cost," AARP Public Policy Institute, (2001-2002)

Description

Innovative Approaches to Controlling
Medicaid Prescription Drug Costs

The aim of this project is to examine recent state-level policies intended to control the rapid escalation in Medicaid prescription drug costs.  This project will provide policy makers and others with an overview of the various approaches that the states have taken to reduce Medicaid prescription drug costs.  The review will also examine the legal and political implications of these approaches.  The analysis will be framed as a matrix of policy components (unit price, utilization, quality) and evaluation criteria (potential for cost reductions, impact on access to pharmaceuticals, administrative complexity and cost, legal issues, stakeholder concerns).
