Denise
L. Orwig, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department
of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine and the recipient
of a National Research Service Award Postdoctoral Traineeship
in the Primary Care Training Program. Dr. Orwig received a
dual Bachelor of Science degree in Business/Psychology from
the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science degree
in Applied Behavioral Science from The Johns Hopkins University.
She received her doctoral degree from The Pennsylvania State
University in Biobehavioral Health and Gerontology where she
was awarded a predoctoral fellowship from the National Institute
on Aging. Dr. Orwig's research interest is focused on outcomes
in the older population with a specialization in geriatric
pharmacoepidemiology.
She is currently principal investigator on a grant from AARP
testing the reliability and validity of a medication management
instrument for older adults. She was a co-investigator on
a study evaluating a medication management pilot project among
elderly living in congregate housing in the city of Baltimore.
Dr. Orwig has a great deal of experience with linkage and
analyses of large secondary data sets (claims-based health
data, mortality data, drug utilization review screening systems);
in research on health outcomes associated with prescription
drug-related risk and prescriber practices; and has specific
expertise in the recruitment and retention of elderly research
subjects, in field coordination efforts, protocol development,
and maximizing treatment fidelity.
Dr. Orwig is currently the Associate Director of the Baltimore
Hip Studies (BHS), a program of research that has been in
place since 1983 investigating hip fracture and hip replacement.
Past studies under this program have focused on such outcomes
as mortality and functional recovery following hip fracture.
She is a co-investigator of the two current intervention studies
of the BHS and she is a co-investigator on several other grants
examining various aspects of recovery from hip fracture.
