Background
The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Lamy Center on Drug Therapy
and Aging and Maryland Chapter- American Society of Consultant Pharmacists has
created a one year post-doctoral residency in geriatric pharmacy practice.
This residency combines clinical, administrative and research components to
provide the resident with invaluable skills to pursue leadership roles in the field of
geriatrics. With the number of elderly booming and an increasing focus on
appropriate medication use, this resident will be well prepared to work in the
dynamic area of geriatrics.
The Peter Lamy Center’s mission is to improve drug therapy for aging adults
through innovative research, education and clinical initiatives. Through the
diversity of the faculty and the many practice sites available, the resident will get a
broad view of issues facing many older individuals.
Objectives
- Develop skills to critically evaluate complex medication regimens and provide
recommendations.
- Differentiate the appropriateness of certain medication classes in the elderly.
- Promote professional, public and political awareness of the important role that pharmacists
play in providing health care services to the elderly in various levels of senior environments.
- Enhance verbal and written communication skills through interactions with health care
practitioners and consumers.
- Develop teaching skills by participating in didactic and experiential education of students,
faculty, and professional staff.
- Participate in the Maryland Chapter - American Society of Consultant Pharmacists to promote
pharmacists awareness regarding legislative and therapeutic issues pertinent to the elderly
Conduct research related to geriatric medication related issues that impacts patient care and health
outcomes.
Qualifications
Applicant must possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and be licensed or eligible for licensure in the
State of Maryland. Although a record of academic excellence is a plus, the selection committee will
seek those applicants with strong communication, leadership skills and a passion to work in
geriatrics.
Teaching
The resident will receive an appointment as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Maryland
School of Pharmacy. The resident will gain experience as a preceptor for pharmacy students on
clinical clerkships, lecturer on geriatric topics, presenter on medical rounds and pharmacotherapy
courses.
Research
The resident will complete a research project which will be presented at the Eastern States
Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors. Additionally, this research project will be
presented at an appropriate national conference. The project should be of such quality that the
results can be published in a peer-reviewed journal. The resident will be working with the
American Association of Retired Persons (A.A.R.P.)/ Retired Persons Services (R.P.S.) in a
collaborative project.
Community Outreach
Consistent with promoting educational outreach to the community, the resident will have the
opportunity to work with state and local associations to increase awareness of medications and
their appropriate use in the elderly.
