Fellows in Regulatory Science

Each regulatory science fellow will spend two years conducting interventional clinical research (i.e. clinical trial research) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. In a clinical trial, participants receive specific interventions (e.g. drug candidates) according to the research protocol created by the investigators. Interventional clinical research differs from other types of human subject research, such as observational studies or analysis of existing data, which are more commonly studied by students at universities. In spite of the importance of phase 1, 2, and 3 clinical research to medical product development, interventional clinical research is typically not taught at academic research centers, which often do not offer training in regulatory science.

Through the School of Pharmacy’s strong ties to FDA and the industry, each fellow will gain broad exposure to regulatory science, and will have the option to enroll in the School’s MS in Regulatory Science program. Underrepresented minorities in regulatory affairs departments at companies that deliver tomorrow’s medical products will have impact on health disparities, while enjoying greater career opportunities and higher compensation.
