The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy invites second-year student pharmacists enrolled at the School to apply for the Felix A. Khin-Maung-Gyi Memorial Scholarship for Pharmapreneurship.

Established in 2019 with a $750,000 gift from the Gyi Family, the Felix A. Khin-Maung-Gyi Memorial Scholarship for Pharmapreneurship provides one full year of tuition for a student pharmacist who has demonstrated a commitment to entrepreneurship. The scholarship is named in honor of Felix A. Khin-Maung-Gyi, BSP ’83, PharmD, MBA, founder of Chesapeake Research Review and a beloved alumnus of the School of Pharmacy, who passed away in 2014.

Eligibility:

  • Students enrolled in their 2nd professional year at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (UMSOP) are eligible to apply.
  • The scholarship will be awarded starting the fall semester of the awardee’s 3rd professional year.

Application Materials:

Student pharmacists who are interested in applying for the Felix A. Khin-Maung-Gyi Memorial Scholarship for Pharmapreneurship must submit the following materials:

  1. Statement of Interest: The applicant’s statement of interest consists of a 1-2 page essay that introduces the applicant, highlights their qualifications for the Gyi Scholarship, and describes their future career goals.
  2. Executive Summary: Develop an executive summary (1 page) to pitch an idea that you would develop further should you receive the Gyi Scholarship. Download a template to help format an executive summary here.
  3. Video: Submit a video (.mp4 format; maximum three (3) minutes) in which you discuss the innovative aspects of your idea and its potential for sustained impact on the field of pharmacy.
  4. Resume/CV: Include professional and personal accomplishments that are relevant to the Gyi Scholarship application.
  5. Letters of Recommendation: Identify two (2) individuals who can submit letters of recommendation on your behalf.

Dates and Deadlines:

Selection Criteria:

The Gyi Scholarship aims to support a student who has demonstrated excellence in Pharmapreneurship™ and an overall portfolio that displays the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to lead future innovation and advance patient care and the profession of pharmacy.

Submitted applications will be reviewed by an expert committee and judged on the following criteria:

  1. Pharmapreneurship™ activity and potential (20%)
    • Demonstrated by CV, letters of recommendation, and short essay
  2. Academic Performance (20%)
    • Demonstrated by a qualitative evaluation of transcripts and CV
  3. Leadership Ability (20%)
    • Demonstrated by CV, letters of recommendation, and short essay
  4. Significance, impact, and innovation of proposed project (20%)
    • Demonstrated by proposal idea, CV, video
  5. Service to the pharmacy profession and community (20%)
    • Demonstrated by CV, letters of recommendation, and short essay

Awardee Commitment:

The Gyi Scholarship represents one of the School of Pharmacy's highest honors bestowed on a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) student. This prestigious award comes with a significant financial commitment from the foundation through our generous donors. The awardee will be expected to:

  • Continue to demonstrate excellence within and outside of the classroom
  • Serve as a voting member of the UMSOP’s Pharmapreneurship™ Task Force
  • Deliver a school-wide presentation in the spring semester of the third professional year
  • Serve as a mentor in the fourth professional year to the succeeding Gyi Scholarship Awardee
  • Support UMSOP or University donor-centered events, as well as events promoting UMSOP’s Pharmapreneurship™ initiative
