Explore Global APPE Rotation Opportunities

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy's Experiential Learning Program (ELP) offers student pharmacists the opportunity to participate in Global Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) through partnerships with institutions around the world.

International rotations give students the chance to experience pharmacy practice in different cultural and health care settings while building clinical knowledge, communication skills, and global perspective.

International Partner Sites

UMSOP currently offers international rotation opportunities through partnerships in countries including: Egypt, India, Italy, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Thailand, and Zambia. The School continues to expand its global partnerships and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

Why Choose a Global Rotation?

A global APPE rotation offers more than the opportunity to travel. Students develop skills that support both their professional and personal growth.

Benefits include:

  • Exposure to global health systems and international pharmacy practice
  • Hands-on clinical and patient care experiences
  • Increased cultural competency and communication skills
  • Opportunities to work alongside international health care teams
  • Greater confidence, adaptability, and independence
  • Enhanced understanding of public health and health equity
  • Lifelong professional and personal connections

My rotation in Ascoli Piceno, Italy gave me firsthand insight into how pharmacy and healthcare can differ across the world. Experiencing Italy’s patient-centered approach broadened my perspective and helped me appreciate how cultural and system-level differences shape patient care. The relationships I formed with local professionals and the experience of living abroad made the rotation both personally and professionally meaningful. Opportunities like this—anywhere around the globe—can truly expand the way we think about healthcare.

What Experiences Are Available?

Each global rotation offers unique learning opportunities based on the host institution and practice setting. Students may participate in experiences related to:

  • Infectious diseases
  • HIV care
  • Pediatrics
  • Ambulatory care
  • Community pharmacy
  • Public health
  • Research and academic collaboration

Students work closely with local preceptors and health care teams while learning how pharmacy practice differs across countries and cultures.

Students who have the chance to participate in an international rotation always describe them as life-changing. A lot of personal and professional growth can happen when you are challenged to go outside of your comfort zone, go to a completely new practice area, and learn from people in places that don't look like what you are accustomed to in your home country.
